Scope Note: During World War II, the United States Navy operated a pre-flight school at Saint Mary’s College from 1942 to 1946 as part of its effort to quickly train aviators and officers. This military program trained thousands of cadets and significantly boosted the campus's population and infrastructure during the war. Navy Pre-Flight schools were also in University of North Carolina, University of Iowa, and the University of Georgia.
