Scope Note: Saint Mary's College was located at the corner of Broadway and Hawthorne in Oakland, California from 1889 to 1928. The cornerstone was laid on October 22, 1887 by Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco. Consisting of 2,500,000 red bricks, the building was affectionally known as the "Old Brickpile."The building suffered three major natural disasters during its thirty-nine years in Oakland - a fire in 1894, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and finally another fire in 1918.
On May 15, 1927 the final graduating class of the Oakland Brickpile held their commencement on the grounds of the new campus in Moraga, California. Classes began in the Fall of 1928 with the largest freshman class in the history of the College.
