"Base ball at St. Mary's began during the later part of the 19th century and the teams were originally known as the St. Mary's Base Ball Club, nicknamed the Phoenix, before changing their name to the Gaels during the 1940s...The Phoenix played their first game in 1872...St. Mary's dominated college baseball in the West during the first part of the 20th century by winning 12 straight California-Nevada Baseball League titles between 1901 and 1913."
